3 professional wardrobe must-haves

A fashion great once said,

“Dress shabbily and they remember the dress;
dress impeccably and they remember the woman.”
— Coco Chanel

It’s totally true. Clothes make the (wo)man, therefore they make her memorable, too.

An email from Seventeen came to my inbox last week. It touted the 17 things every girl should have in her closet by the time she’s 21. While I’m working on age 23, I read the article and agreed with most of it. Denim jackets, black blazers and every-day stud earrings are necessary, but there are other items one should have in her closet, whether she’s approaching 21, 25 or 30.

  • Kitten heels
    Try this experiment: put on a pair of heels and stand in front of a mirror. Look at your new and improved legs, sans flats. Heels perform face lifts for calves and instantly make you look better. Same goes for the always-comfortable kitten heel.

  • A straight-up professional dress
    LBDs are great but 100 percent predictable. Something different yet completely professional shows that you know how to dress and know how to get the job done. Last year I wore one of these numbers to a publishing conference, and I can’t tell you how many compliments I received — people remembered the dress and the woman. Now put it on and go kill that presentation.

  • A structured, solid-colored purse
    The trick here is color. I like bright primaries for fall because they look perfect with tweed jackets.

If you add these three items to your wardrobe you’ll definitely be the standout gal in the room.

Love,
